Base FAQs
How is each Base different?
Each Base has its own personality, shaped by the rabbi and their vision for what makes a vibrant Jewish community. That said, all Bases share a few core values—hospitality, learning, and service—and are rooted in the idea that there’s no “one right way” to do Judaism. So, while every Base has its own flavor, you’ll always find a warm, welcoming space where relationships and connection come first.
Who are Base rabbis?
Bases are pluralistic communities and we are especially proud to have rabbis who come from a diversity of Jewish backgrounds. There’s no one “type” of rabbi here. What they all share is a passion for a Judaism that is vibrant and inclusive for Jews, friends, and partners of all kind, and the spiritual entrepreneurship to build inspiring communities of meaning and depth.
Some Bases are run by a rabbinic couple. What does that mean?
Think of a rabbinic couple like a power team—they bring different strengths and perspectives to the table to create a dynamic, welcoming community. The rabbi and their partner are true collaborators in bringing Jewish community to life and making Base feel like an extension of their home.
Sometimes, you might find yourself connecting deeply the Base partner—seeking their mentorship and guidance as well. Both are here to make Base a space where you feel seen and supported.
What kind of experiences does Base offer?
Bases host a wide variety of opportunities, from bigger Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations to intimate Jewish learning series, or individual pastoral counseling and support. Bases are tailored to meet the needs and interests of its local community, so no two calendars look the same.
In what ways can my Base Rabbi support me?
Your Base Rabbi is there to support you in many ways, and your relationship will likely grow and evolve over time. Here are just a few ways they can be a resource for you:
- Sit down one-on-one to talk about your Jewish journey.
- Study Jewish texts together on topics you’re curious about.
- Host you for a Shabbat or holiday meal.
- Provide pastoral care during challenging times or big life transitions.
- Support you through lifecycle moments like weddings, mourning, or conversion.
Whether you’re looking for guidance, learning, or just someone to talk to, your Base rabbi is ready to help.
Do I have to be Jewish to attend Base events?
Not at all! Base welcomes Jewish young adults, their friends, and partners—whether you’re Jewish, curious about Judaism, or simply looking to connect.
My Base rabbi is leading an Embark cohort. What is that?
Embark is a Mem Global program for interfaith and mixed-heritage couples who want to explore Jewish life together – without the pressure of conversion. If your Base is hosting an Embark cohort, it means your rabbi and Base community are offering a welcoming space for couples to learn from each other and make Judaism feel meaningful and accessible through learning and conversation.
