Retreatology FAQs
Who is Retreatology for?
Retreatology is for Jewish young adults ages 22 –32 who are ready to dream big and create meaningful Jewish experiences for their peers. Whether you are a Moishe House resident, MHWOW host, Mem Global alumni, or new to our community – let’s get started.
How much does it cost?
Retreatology is generously funded by the Maimonides Fund. Your cost to attend is $25, plus a refundable $150 deposit. You are responsible for your travel to and from the retreat location, but limited travel stipends are available to help offset costs.
Do I need to have an idea to attend?
Not necessarily, but it’s encouraged! While you don’t need a fully formed plan (that’s what we’re here to help with!), every participant must commit to running their retreat within one year of attending Retreatology.
What happens after Retreatology?
Retreatology is just the start! After the 3-day weekend, you’ll be paired with a mentor who will guide you through planning your retreat. From creating a budget to finding a venue and recruiting participants, you’ll have support every step of the way.
What kinds of retreats can I plan?
The sky’s the limit! Past Retreatologists have created mindfulness weekends, Shabbat yoga retreats, creative writing workshops, Jewish cooking adventures, and so much more. Whatever your passion, we’ll help you shape it into an experience that’s uniquely yours.
What’s the time commitment for planning my retreat?
Planning a retreat is a rewarding experience, but it does take time and dedication. Most participants spend 3–6 months working on their retreats, depending on their vision and schedule. Don’t worry—your mentor will help you stay on track!
How does the grant work?
You can request either $4,500 or $6,000 to fund your retreat and cover related expenses. In your grant application, you’ll share your retreat vision—everything from the topic and goals to who it’s for. Once your application is approved, the planning process kicks off.
Here’s how it works:
- Upfront Payment: You’ll receive up to 75% of your grant at the start of the planning process to cover early expenses.
- Final Payment: The remaining 25% will be paid out after you submit your final report, which includes a summary of your retreat, amazing photos of the weekend, and your final budget.
This funding is here to help you bring your retreat to life, and we’ll be with you every step of the way to make it happen! To learn more – see our grant agreement or reach out to retreatology@memglobal.org with your questions.
If I am a resident or host can I have the grant sent to a different account than what we have on file?
No. We ask that you use the same account that we have on file. However, if this is problematic you can reach out to the Retreatology team and we can see what accomodations are possible.
When applying for a PLR grant does the application have to be written in English?
No. You are welcome to submit your application in your native language. We want to make this process as easy for you as possible.
Do purchases for my PLR need to be made only by the retreat faciliator?
No. As long as you have an itemized receipt with the date, name of the vendor and proof of payment, that is all you need in order for it to be counted as an expense for your PLR.
If I am under budget and I did not initially take my full honorarium am I allowed to take the full amount?
Yes. You are permitted to edit your final budget in order to take the full honorarium you are entitled to.
