MHWOW FAQs
What is the difference between Moishe House and Moishe House Without Walls (MHWOW)?
Sometimes, life’s too packed for the commitment of a Moishe House or Pod, where residents typically lead five or more programs each month. MHWOW offers a flexible way to build Jewish community with as little as one program per month—ideal for those wanting to create a Jewish community without the higher time commitment or for communities just starting to grow.
What are the responsibilities of an MHWOW host?
As an MHWOW host, you’ll bring Jewish life to your community by hosting at least one program per month during your 12-month term—and you can even host up to two programs per month if you’d like! Programs can be in-person or virtual, and they’re your chance to create Jewish-themed gatherings that resonate with your peers.
How do I become a host?
To become a host, apply through the Mem Global website. If you’re eligible, we’ll contact you for an interview, and if you’re selected, you’ll have an onboarding call to begin your hosting journey.
How old do I have to be to be a host?
In North America, MHWOW hosts must be between the ages of 22 and 32. Outside of North America, we aim for the same ages, but if you’re just outside this range, feel free to apply, and we’ll see if it’s a fit!
Do I need any special experience to become a host?
Not necessarily! You don’t need to be a professional program planner or a Jewish expert to be a successful MHWOW host. What matters most is your passion for bringing people together and creating meaningful Jewish experiences.
Here are a few key things we’re looking for in hosts:
Host Must-Haves:
- An already established local social network (in-person) or the ability to recruit new people into your network
- A proven history of organizing and mobilizing a community
- Motivation and a self-starter attitude
- Passion for making Judaism relevant and alive for yourself and others
Host Nice-to-Haves:
- Some level of Jewish knowledge or experience in Jewish spaces
- A diverse Jewish background—whether in practice, observance, or education
- Previous engagement with Moishe House programming
- Experience creating programs, whether personal or professional
If this sounds like you, we’d love for you to apply! If you’re unsure, reach out to us at mhwow@memglobal.org for more info.
Do I have to be Jewish to be a host?
No, MHWOW hosts can be someone who is already Jewish or is on their Jewish journey. Mem Global and MHWOW are pluralistic in nature, so we welcome (and want!) hosts with diverse Jewish backgrounds, practices, and experiences. Your programs should also be inclusive and open to participants of diverse backgrounds who are interested in engaging with Jewish community.
What kind of programs can I host?
Every program should have a Jewish theme or component, but how you bring it to life is entirely up to you and your community’s interests. We’ve seen all kinds of programs! From Shabbat dinners and Tikkun Olam (service) projects, laser tag, shadow puppets and even a Havdalah at sea. All of that to say, bring on creativity!
Who can I invite to my programs?
MHWOW programs are for Jewish young adults ages 22–30s. You can make your guest list private or public, but each program must have at least four participants, including yourself.
How much funding is available for programs?
You can be reimbursed up to $300 per program, based on $15 per person (including yourself). For example, if 12 people attend, you can receive up to $180. Funding covers items like food, decorations, and disposable Judaica (e.g., Shabbat candles, challah). Alcohol (except for hard liquor) is also reimbursable, but only up to 20% of your budget.
What resources are available to me?
MHWOW hosts have access to:
- Monthly program guides
- A dedicated Jewish Life Specialist for brainstorming and content support
- A Program Specialist to support you through your MHWOW journey
] - Immersive Jewish learning retreats
- Grants and scholarships to enhance your programs or for personal leadership development
- Educational materials and resources
- A global network of fellow hosts
What is the Capstone Program?
At the end of your 12 months of hosting, you’ll have the chance to celebrate your year of building Jewish community with a special Capstone program. It’s your opportunity to go big!
Additional funding is available to help bring your vision to life, ranging from $150 to $300 depending on the number of participants. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your hosting journey and make a lasting impact on your community.
What happens if I can’t host a program one month?
We understand that life happens! If you need to skip a month due to unforeseen circumstances, let us know. We’re here to support you and help keep your hosting journey on track. In these situations, hosts will make up the missed program by hosting twice the following month.
