Mem Moment | Powerful Moments

Rosh Chodesh Sivan

We’re about to start the month of Sivan, during which our ancestors received the Torah at Mt. Sinai and the Jewish people became united under a common set of values. Our tradition states that Rosh Chodesh Sivan, the first day of the month, is the day that we arrived at Mt. Sinai. After learning about this, I couldn’t stop thinking about how auspicious that moment must have been. This is the moment that changed everything for our people, and set up Judaism as we know it today. This moment gave the Jewish people a big opportunity. When first receiving the Torah, we were given the chance to use the Torah’s guidelines to improve our lives and make the world a better place.

From this example, we can learn that all things have a starting point, and through just one moment, we can make a powerful impact. At one time or another, we will each have a “standing at Sinai” moment, when our actions will have ripple effects that will lead to significant change.

We can see this lesson play out in our work at Mem Global. As community builders and community members, we’re constantly seeking to use powerful moments as ways to maximize impact and encourage future conversations. For example, when we participate in a Tikkun Olam program and collaborate with local community partners, we’re actively addressing a pressing need in the community and developing relationships that could be beneficial later on.

What is one effect you would like to have on your community, or on the world at large?

What is one way in which you think you can bring this change to fruition?
