Mem Moment | Strong Relationships Take Effort

By Olivia

Parashat Yitro

In Parashat Yitro, we see the incredible moment when the Ten Commandments are given at Mount Sinai. These commandments aren’t just rules – they’re a guide for building meaningful relationships: with God, with the people around us, and with ourselves. The Ten Commandments can be divided into two categories, though the exact division is a subject of contention. The first group focuses on our connection to God, encouraging us to acknowledge and honor the divine. The remaining commandments guide how we treat others—with respect, honesty, and kindness. Parashat Yitro reminds us that strong relationships aren’t something that just happen; they’re something we should actively work on every day through our actions and choices.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s a great time to think about what it means to invest in our relationships. Whether it’s our connection to God, our interactions with others, or the way we treat ourselves, relationships require effort, care, and intention. It’s in the little things: being kind to your neighbor, showing yourself some compassion, or taking a moment to connect spiritually. Let’s take a cue from Moses’ father-in-law, Yitro, this week and think about how commandments can guide the way we live our lives and strengthen the relationships that matter most. What steps can you take to live more intentionally and build deeper connections with those around you?
