Build Your Own Sukkah

By Annie Prusky, Jewish Life Specialist

Step 1: Pick your sukkah size: An 8×8 sukkah will comfortably fit 6-8 people; An 8×16 sukkah will comfortably fit 12-15 people.

Step 2: Choose one of three sukkah plans below

Step 3: If you are a Moishe House/Pod Resident: Apply for a Jewish Holidays grant to help cover the cost of materials. If you plan to do some Jewish learning or Shabbat programming in your sukkah, consider applying for those grants, too. These should cover half or more of the sukkah cost. Consult with your JLS/JE about getting the rest covered with additional grant support.

Step 4: Purchase necessary materials, invite participants, and get building
Check to see if there’s a tool rental place by you so you don’t need to purchase the tools to put your sukkah together!

Step 5: Don’t forget to send awesome pictures of the construction process and final product to your CM!

Don’t forget that each of these plans still require schach for the roof!!

PLAN 1: Pop-Up Canopy Sukkah

$250-100 (10×10)

PLAN 2: Wood Sukkah from Sukkot.com

$300-500 (8×8) or $500-700 (8×16)

PLAN 3: PVC Pipe Sukkah

$350-450 (8×8)

The cube shape keeps the sukkah strong. To create an 8×16 sukkah, build two cubes next to each other and attach them with zip-ties.
