Fairtrade Values and Jewish Values

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

Host an educational Tikkun Olam program around chocolate! Either purchase a sampling of Fair Trade chocolate treats to try (which you could pair with Fair Trade coffees, teas, or other drinks), or make your own Fair Trade chocolates to enjoy. While you snack on Fair Trade chocolate, guide a conversation looking at Fair Trade and Jewish values.

MATERIALS:  

  • Service Learning Source Sheet (below)
  • Fair Trade Chocolate Treats
    • Look for items with the Fair Trade symbol (to the right)
  • Common brands include Equal Exchange, Divine, and Unreal
  • If you’re making your own chocolate:
    • Chocolate molds
    • Fair trade melting chocolate or whole chocolate bars
  • Speaker (or phone to play song)

PROGRAM OUTLINE (60 minutes): 

  • Decide if you want to have the conversation on Fair Trade and Jewish values before, during, or after eating the chocolate
  • Welcome guests into the space
  • Use the service learning sheet below to guide a conversation around:
    • Issues witht he chocolate industry and specifically the cocoa industry
    • Fair trade values/principles compared to Jewish wisdom
    • Listen to the P!nk song (P!nk is a proud Jewish artist!!), and examine its relationship to the issues in the chocolate industry
    • Act – Decide what actions you can and will take as a community and as individuals as a result of this program and learning
