Farmer’s Market Scavenger Hunt

By Rabbi Shari Shamah, Jewish Life Specialist

OVERVIEW:

A farmer’s market is a great way to get outside, and peruse (purchase) fresh vegetables, fruits, baked goods, and other products.  Why not frame your Farmer’s Market in a Jewish perspective and instill a little friendly competition into the event to engage your community?

MATERIALS:

  • Every team needs a cell phone with photo taking capacity
  • Sheet of categories to search for [attached]
  • Money to treat everyone to snacks
  • Google drive to upload pictures

PROGRAM OUTLINE:

  • The beginning of the program is a meet up at the entrance to the market.   You’ll greet your community and ask them to arrange themselves into teams.  There can be as few as 2 teams and as many as you want.
  • Start the discussion with asking if a Farmer’s Market has Jewish connections?
  • While a Farmer’s Market may not be specifically Jewish, it can be framed in a Jewish perspective.
  • What are some reasons to support local farmer’s markets?
  • How do they incorporate this in their lives?
  • The middle of the program is the scavenger hunt.  While wandering through the market, each team needs to find and photograph some combination of these items.
  • The best Vegan food
  • The best local produce
  • Items from a Fair Trade marked stall
  • Any kosher certified products
  • Items from a Black or LGBTQ+ owned stall
  • The best bite
  • Something that invokes a Jewish memory/cultural connection for your group
  • Something else you want them to find
  • Jewish connections – either in the opening discussion, by passing out the sheet of Jewish framework texts to use as they walk, or in the conclusion, ask them to think about these items from a Jewish perspective.  Does this change how they approach a market?

Ask teams to upload pictures in google drive.  Choose a winning team from amongst the teams (you can choose based on numbers of pictures submitted, most creative, fastest, etc…) and purchase a snack for them from one of the category stalls.
