Golem-O-Ween

By Rabbi Shari Shamah, Jewish Life Specialist

INTRODUCTION:

This program will offer a connection between Halloween spirits, demons and golems in Jewish tradition. It’s a fun way to bring in learning about Jewish views on spirits while also getting in the Halloween fun. It also seeks to combine learning with something hands-on for participants to do while they’re spending time together.

MATERIALS:

  • Clay
  • Text Sheet: Will Your Golem Help or Haunt You (below)
  • Toothpicks
  • Pitcher of water
  • Costumes to enhance mood of program
  • Buckets of Halloween Candy for munching
  • Optional:
    • Plastic bags to put Golem in

PROGRAM OUTLINE (1-2 hours):

  • Pre-program, attendees will be asked to come in costume to enhance the vibe
  • Program begins with a short discussion of demons and spirits in Judaism (see resource sheet below for texts to choose from and discussion questions)
  • As people separate to shmooze, eat dinner, pass out Halloween candy, etc there will be a table set up with clay, water, toothpicks and instructions (resource sheets) to make a golem. When completed, if they choose to take their golem home it can be placed in the plastic bag and saved for later.
