- Ask participants to bring small glass jars – reusing small food jars is great!
- Printed source sheets
- Printed plant care guides
- Large posters of the 3 Hebrew words and their various translations
- Post-it notes in 3 colors (or a few markers in each of 3 colors)
- Succulent soil mix
- Miniature terracotta pots
- Crafts for decorating glass and terracotta – paint pens, cotton cord, decorative pebbles, scissors, glue, etc.
- 2-3 mother plants like Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum), Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe daigremontiana), or Wandering Jew (Tradescantia zebrina)
PROGRAM OUTLINE (80 minutes):
- Arrival and Word Wall (10 minutes)
- Discussion (20 minutes)
- Plant Workshop (30 minutes)
- Closing (10 minutes)
Setup: Before the Program, set up three stations:
- Set up four stations (one for each plant). Each station should have:
- The Propagation Station: Provide 2-3 “mother plants” (Golden Pothos, Wandering Jew, Spider Plant, Mother of Thousands, etc.) with instructions on how to propagate them. Have participants drop off their glass jars here and provide a jug of water as well. Put one of the “Quick Care Comparison” sheets at this table, as well as additional information on each of the mother plants.
- The Succulent Station: Provide a selection of miniature succulent cuttings to choose from, a well-draining succulent soil mix, and the miniature terracotta pots. Put one of the “Quick Care Comparison” sheets at this table, as well as information on taking care of succulents in particular.
- The Crafting Station: Offer acrylic paint pens, pretty stones, cotton cord, and anything else to decorate and display plant containers. You may want to include instructions on how to tie cotton cord into a basic plant holder.
Part One: Arrival and Word Wall (10 minutes)
- Give everyone sticky note (or markers). Ask them to walk around and put:
- a blue sticky note (or star) next to the translation that best reflects their relationship with houseplants
- a yellow sticky note/star next to the translation that best reflects their relationship with their immediate environment (their bedroom, yard, work desk, etc.)
- a green sticky note/star next to the translation that best reflects their relationship with the natural world as a whole
Part Two: Rotating Discussion (20 minutes)
- Transition into small groups (3-5 people). Hand out copies of the source sheet and go through the discussion questions.
Part Three: Plant Workshop (30 minutes)
- As you decorate, discuss:
- There are two versions of the creation story. In one, the first two humans are created side-by-side and commanded to “fill and master” (or “subdue”) the land (Bring everyone back together and introduce the three stations, then encourage participants to go forth and plant!
Part Four: Closing & “Plant Parent” Intentions (10 minutes)
- Bring everyone back together. Ask each person to look at their new plant and choose one of the three Hebrew words from the wall and which of its many translations they want to “assign” to their relationship with this specific plant. (e.g. are they going to guard it by ensuring it survives the winter? Are they going to serve it by caring for it like a queen? Are they going to make sure it doesn’t get out of control?
