How Well Do You Know Your Jew-IQ?  A Rainy-Day Program

By Rabbi Shari Shamah, Jewish Life Specialist

INTRODUCTION:

Learning interesting facts about your own culture, or another is a great way to get to know one another, broaden your horizons and open the space for dialogue.  There’s no better time to do this than on a rainy day when you need to pivot your program plans. This PowerPoint is very general so it can be used for someone that comes from a Jewish background, non-Jewish background or finds themselves somewhere in between.  Note, if you wanted to turn this into a multi-cultural learning moment, have someone who comes from another race/ethnicity/culture prepare their own PowerPoint and have fun taking turns going through both.

MATERIALS:

  • How Well Do You Know Your Jew-IQ PowerPoint How Well Do you Know your Jewish IQ.pptx
  • Jewish foods/snacks that can easily be picked up from grocery store.  (Ie, Trader Joe’s Babka, rugelach, lox and bagels)
  • Computer and/or projector to show PowerPoint

PROGRAM OUTLINE (1 hr):

  • [part one] Welcome and ice breaker
  • [part two] PowerPoint quiz
  • [part three] Rapid Fire Wrap Up: What else would you put

[part one] (15 Mins)

  • Have snacks out and have everyone search their phone for their oldest photo on their phone that they want to share.  Find a partner to share and explain the photo.  Switch 4 times so that you meet others.

[part two] (25-35 Mins)

  • Using PowerPoint, click through and see how you do.  There are notes on the bottom of each slide with hints to give if they aren’t getting it right away, as well as the answers.
  • Depending on how many people are there and how long it’s taking, you can ask people to share context on any of the slides.
  • Take some time to enjoy the Jewish snacks in between.
  • Make sure to talk about how this is a judgement free if you don’t get this all correct.

[part three] (10 min)

  • This PowerPoint is obviously not exhaustive and is very subjective.  In a Rapid Fire Wrap Up, ask people to think about what is interesting about the Jewish culture that was shown, or another culture?  What would you include next time.  How does this change because of your demographic?
