Jewish Calendar Making Scavenger Hunt
With a chavruta (a learning partner) and a device (phone or laptop) explore the Jewish calendar through some searching and sharing!
For this exercise, here a few websites that will have reliable and accessible information:
Scavenger Hunt:
- Each of you should find one Jewish holiday with which you are not so familiar. Spend five minutes researching the holiday and then share with your chavruta two new things you learned about the holiday!
- Optional Guiding Questions: How is the holiday celebrated? What rituals are integral to this holiday? What is the origin of the holiday? Is it celebrated at the same time in all places?
- Each of you should find one Jewish holiday with which you are familiar. Spend five minutes researching the holiday until you discover something new that you didn’t previously know about the holiday. Share what you learned with your chavruta!
- Optional Guiding Questions: Are there customs for this holiday that are unique to certain communities? What is a food or a symbol attached to this holiday? How do different denominations of Judaism observe this holiday?
- Each of you should choose one Jewish holiday with which you have fond memories! Share with your chavruta a story or some memories you associate with that holiday.
- Optional Guiding Questions: What is the first memory you have of that holiday? What do you typically do for that holiday? How does it feel to observe that holiday? What does it sound/smell/taste like? With whom do you celebrate the holiday?
