Retreat FAQs
Who are Mem Global Retreats for?
Our retreats are designed for Jewish young adults (22-32) who are curious about Jewish life, looking to connect with others, or eager to bring new ideas back to their communities at home. Whether you’re deeply rooted in Jewish traditions or just beginning to explore, you’ll find a space to learn and grow at a Mem Global Retreat.
Who are the staff for Mem Global Retreats?
Mem Global Retreats are staffed by Mem Global team members and top Jewish educators. Retreat educators have studied at leading institutions including HUC-JIR, the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Hebrew University, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies. You’ll learn from rabbis, artists, and educators who bring creativity, expertise, and fresh perspectives to every session.
How much does it cost to attend a Mem Global retreat?
We’re able to highly subsidize your experience thanks to our incredible donors. Each retreat has a participation fee that ranges from $50 – $80. We also ask for a $100 deposit to save your spot which is fully refunded after the retreat!
Your participation fee includes accommodations, meals, transportation to/from the airport (that is designated as the retreat airport for arrivals/departures), educational content, learning materials, swag, and all retreat activities are included!
We also offer travel reimbursements:
- Up to $100 for everyone else
- Up to $250 for current or former Moishe House residents and MHWOW hosts
How do travel subsidies/reimbursements work if I drive to a retreat?
If you’re driving, we’ll reimburse you based on mileage. Just send us proof of your trip, like a Google Maps screenshot or a PDF of your route. Unfortunately, we can’t reimburse gas receipts anymore because of accounting rules (GAAP, for the finance fans out there).
What time do Retreats start on Friday? Do I need to take time off work?
Retreats generally start around 3:00 pm on Fridays. If you are flying, we request that you land at the airport by noon. If you’re local, you might only need a half-day off work, but if you’re traveling, you’ll probably need the full day to make it on time.
What are the accommodations? Is the housing shared or separate?
It depends on the retreat! Sometimes we’re in cozy summer camp-style bunks, and other times it’s hotel-style rooms. Usually, you’ll share a room with 2–3 people who share your gender pronouns. If you have specific needs, let us know—we’ll do our best to make it work.
We’ll share all the lodging details before your Retreat so please reach out and ask if you have any questions or concerns.
What should I pack?
You’ll want to pack clothing, toiletries, and anything else you need to feel comfortable while you’re away. Some retreats might suggest extras, like layers for the weather or specific gear for activities. Don’t worry—we’ll send you a detailed packing list before you go!
Do I have to stay the entire time?
Yes, we ask everyone to stay for the full retreat. Each part of the weekend is designed to build community, deepen connections, and create a shared experience that grows richer with time. Leaving early means missing out on the magic we create together—and we’d hate for you to miss any of it!
If you leave early, we cannot refund your deposit nor can we reimburse your travel expenses.
Is the food kosher?
Food depends on the retreat venue. Some places serve strictly kosher meals, others are kosher-style, and some aren’t kosher at all. Whatever the setup, we’ll make sure you know in advance and do our best to accommodate dietary needs like vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free. If you have specific questions, just reach out!
How is Jewish life observed and celebrated during Mem Global retreats?
Jewish life at Mem Global Retreats is all about meeting you where you are. We welcome participants with all kinds of Jewish identities and experiences. Shabbat observance varies by retreat, but you can usually expect:
- Friday: Candle lighting, kiddush, challah, Kabbalat Shabbat, and a big Shabbat dinner
- Saturday: Kiddush before lunch and Havdalah to close out the day
If a retreat isn’t Shomer Shabbat, we’ll let you know ahead of time so you can plan. If you have questions, we’re always happy to chat—email us at retreats@memglobal.org!
Will I fit in at a Mem Global Retreat?
People come to Mem Global programs with many different experiences – Jewish and otherwise! Mem Global is committed to making everyone feel welcome and making it known that they are an important part of the conversation despite the level of their Jewish knowledge, experience, or affiliation with any movement. If you have a question or feel unsure, please reach out to our Retreats team at retreats@memglobal.org
I just applied! When will I hear if I’ve been accepted or not?
Registration opens 3 month before the retreat and we will be in touch about your application status within 5 business days of applying.
I was put on the waitlist…now what?
Our retreats are very popular, and we love that! But sometimes that means spots fill up fast. We prioritize based on:
- Location (we love locals!)
- Current involvement (shoutout to Moishe House residents and MHWOW hosts!)
- First-timers (we love meeting new people!)
- When you apply (the early bird gets the worm!)
If you’re waitlisted, we’ll let you know if a spot opens up. Just hold off on booking travel until you’re officially accepted.
