
Jewish Rom Com Movie Night
INTRODUCTION:
What better way to celebrate Tu B’Av, the Jewish holiday of love, than with a Jewish rom com movie night! Gather your community to discuss the role of Judaism in the genre of romantic comedies as you host the hottest movie screening of the season. Crank the A/C and curl up on the couch or take this event outside for a movie under the stars!
MATERIALS:
- Choose/purchase your movie (here are a few suggestions but feel free to find your own):
- Crossing Delancy
- Keeping the Faith
- Loving Leah
- Between the Temples
- Shiva Baby
- Funny Girl
- Yentl (not comedy, but definitely romance)
- This is Where I Leave You (not romance, but definitely comedy)
- Printed copies of the Jewish Rom Com Movie Night Source Sheet (at the bottom of this page)
- TV or Projector + Sheet/Screen
- Device on which to stream/play movie
- Optional:
- Snacks – Popcorn, heart shaped snacks, (Tu B’Av also celebrates the beginning of the grape harvest so consider serving grape themed snacks: grapes, grape juice, wine, PB&J (with grape jelly), stuffed grape leaves, grape popsicles, oatmeal raisin cookies, etc…)
PROGRAM OUTLINE (90+ minutes):
- First Half of Movie
- Group Learning/Intermission (20 minutes)
- Second Half of Movie
Program Preparation
- Be sure to skim the movie or note the length of the movie to find the approximate halfway point or a good moment to take an intermission to facilitate the group learning time.
First Half of Movie
- Invite guests to grab snacks and find a seat! Announcement the movie if you haven’t already and consider reading a short movie summary so guests know what to expect.
- Watch the first half of the movie!
Group Learning/Intermission (20 minutes)
- Pause the movie and pass out the Source Sheet.
- Let guests know that at the end of the learning there will be time to get more snacks and take a bio break.
- Learn through the Jewish Rom Com Movie Night Source Sheet
- Leave time for a quick (~5 minutes) snack and bathroom break.
Second Half of Movie
- Invite guests to return to their seats and play the second half of the movie!
